Community Gallery - Beth Craig - Pioners Project

Beth Craig – Vessels

For me, the veins and texture of the leaf in my macro photography series represents the links and connections that hold up communities and societies. Each tiny individual line symbolises how in many ways, we as a society are all linked together, supporting and encouraging each other, especially through these current hard times. The BPB will help bring our community together and give us all something to relate to, which is what I wanted to capture in this image. It is hugely important that we come together through times like these to create and inspire those around us.

Within my image it correlates with the theme of environmental waste, this image helps to provide an insight into the daily wastage of house hold products and food. The image highlights how wastage can be up cycled and made into something worth seeing. Therefore, demonstrating how something negative can be made into something positive and emphasise the importance of recycling and protecting our environment through small contributions. My piece is inspired through the artists: j Henry fair and his industrial scars Project as-well as Eian Kantors theme of environmental waste and natural forms. In order to do this piece I collected wasted and out of date products over the course of a week and managed to create this piece using; cola, spoiled milk, oil, jelly, flour, ketchup and Orange juice. Using a macro lens to get those up close details of this waste.

My documentary photographic series is based on the buildings that surround my environment and connect to the society they are in. This image is used currently by the Salvation Army but is in need for some rejuvenation. I want to highlight the people who support, the people who rely on these buildings and paint a picture of the current moment we are in

Inspired by Matthew Chase-Daniel, I have created this piece by using the technique photomontage or, as Chase-Daniel calls it, photo assemblage in order to show elements of nature that exists in our environment. This piece reveals the life that exists in our community and how we should all unite and protect our environment from the damaging effects of climate change. The colourful plants and insects highlight that in our environment there is much more life than humans ourselves. For me, this piece shows the true power of nature and emphasises the importance of it as it builds a lot of the environment we live in and homes for insects that share the environment with us, humans should respect and protect these natural habitats

Felicity Howarth

My photo montage imagery is based on the texture and colour of food. Taking inspiration from the works of Brittany Wright, I wanted to add something to BPB that would make people take note. The bright poppy visuals of the sweets, I hope, will bring a smile on people’s faces and brighten up the grey area that it will be presented in. It will allow us to feel the nostalgia of that youthful excitement on receiving your favourite sweet. Time to indulge!

My photography is based on my theme of framework in society, as it helps show how a building has helped to build and support society and the neighbourhood. This is what I hope the audience will see as they value and enjoy the new Bull Point Barracks augmentation into a community hub. With my series I was inspired by Mathieu Venot and his cropped buildings. To create my imagery I used Photoshop to highlight the blacks and whites, then I made sure that the colours were more noticeable and vibrant. For this, I did a colour block and changed the opacity of the colour so that the initial building would come through then I used the spot healing tool to sort out any imperfections. Finally I used the dodge and burn tool to make some areas darker and some brighter

This tryptic piece is photos of my parents, especially my mum’s hands. I was inspired by the work of Tim Booth and his commitment to showing real people. I did a photoshoot of my parents hands and Photoshop them into black and white photos. I used my cross from my first holy communion to show the Christian side of my history. I wanted to do this type of imagery because my faith is one of the things that stuck with me and my family during my journey from Poland to the UK. With the BPB having a religious space I feel like this piece is for everyone, with or without faith, to feel a connection

Shannon Whear

This tryptic work is based on taking the time of being in the present; enjoying the here and now. We in Plymouth are lucky enough to be surrounded by areas of nature and greenery but often take this for granted. However, we need to appreciate, protect and preserve our green spaces for generations to come. I’ve focused on plants and flowers some would consider weeds to show how important a role these play for our pollinators across the city.

Sophie Middleton

This double exposure piece that I created using an image of my model and an image of a flower which was taken from my first ever shoot portrays hope and moving forward, it also shows my development throughout my photographic journey. Double exposure is when you combine two different images and place them on top of each other, kind of creating a ghost – like image. The flower in this image represents growth and hope. Due to the pandemic, I believed this would be a piece that many people could relate to. Having hope allowed us to see the light at the end of the tunnel, which is becoming more visible due to the slow release of lockdown restrictions; the flower opening and blooming portrays this

The Pioneers Project CIC was born in communities in Plymouth where people face disadvantage, and it has grown to serve children, young people and families who need support across Plymouth and into South East Cornwall and the South Hams in the UK.
