Amazing mural concludes Community Ambassador project in Plymouth
Our Community Ambassador programme on the Fox Field estate in Laira concluded over the summer, as the group rounded off two years of dedication by involving the community in creating a mural.
Supported by LiveWest housing, the project helped a group of 15 young people aged 10-16-years-old learn about social action. They designed and delivered community events; they volunteered at community litter picks and Christmas fayres; and they learned to raise money for good causes.
The mural, opened by Councillor Brian Vincent, was a great way to leave a lasting legacy in the community and it brought together over 70 people, of whom 27 had a go at spray painting the wall with local artist Jon Lilly.
Lisa Dawson, Pioneers Project youth worker who worked on this, said: “It was a fantastic few days and the community really came together to achieve an awesome mural. Jon (Lilly) was superb with the children and the final design was everything the young people wanted.
“The project has been a great success and we’ve had some massive highs over the two years. Taking the group on a residential to the New Forest to seeing them enthusiastically pick litter to completing this mural, we’re delighted with what’s been achieved.”
As a continued legacy, the Pioneers Project CIC is now working with a small group as part of a youth forum. The group are working closely with LiveWest to help shape ongoing provision in the community. This is open for 13-year-olds and up and runs on the second Thursday of each month from 6.30pm to 8.30pm.
