Futureproof Programme helping to build new skills in young people
In September 2019, The Pioneers Project launched a group programme for young people in secondary education in Plymouth and South East Cornwall who are struggling to safely and happily navigate their time in school. The first cohort is nearing the halfway stage of the programme and have engaged so positively, gaining so much from the provision.
The Futureproof programme combines time in the outdoors and youth work practice to tackle subjects such as managing conflict, healthy relationships and healthy minds. And as we recognise World Mental Health Day today, it seems appropriate to recognise how this group have grown in resilience, confidence and understanding around who they are and the challenges they face.
The group have so far enjoyed teambuilding activities at the beach, kayaking in Plymouth Sound, climbing and coastal traversing at Mount Batten, and a treasure hunt around the Hoe and Barbican as they learn about working in a group, key communication skills and overcoming challenges in a healthy and positive manner. The have tackled subjects around managing conflict, critical thinking, teamwork and identity.
Some of the successes and highlights so far include seeing one young man implement techniques to manage anxiety and remain part of the group when faced with a challenging situation. Another young man has grown in confidence and resilience to overcome a fear of failure within physical activities, successfully completing everything put in front of him. A third has taken leadership opportunities despite struggling with social settings and struggling to engage with other people.
We’re really proud of all the participants and the work and effort they’ve put into this so far. Well done team!
